A journey to a sustainable future

Ekofish Group controls the whole quality chain. It starts with the choice of fishing area and fishing techniques. Thereafter, utmost attention is given to the processing and storage of the fish on our modern fleet, which meets the highest standards of hygiene and cooling.

Ekofish Group services the markets in that way with the usual fish species from the North Sea as Plaice, Lemon Sole, Turbot and Brill. Besides the own caught species there is also a corporation with other carefully selected fishing partners who catch “pulse” Dover Sole, MSC Cod, Skrei Cod, MSC Redfish. By staying close to the source the fish is of excellent quality and guaranteed sustainably caught. Ekofish Group wants to become the portal for your sustainably caught seafood excellence.

Plaice

Plaice

Scientific namePleuronectes platessa
Length max100 cm
Weight max7 kg
Age up toAbout 50 years
NutritionCrustaceans, shellfish and worms

The plaice stocks in recent years has grown enormously. In the 50 years that research is done, there has never been more plaice in the North Sea. The plaice is landed at the auctions with a minimum length of 27 cm. Plaice less than 27 cm may not be sold for human consumption. This is not sustainable! Ekofish Group therefore has nets with larger mesh to prevent bycatch of small plaice. The plaice is easily recognized by its skin on the dark side of the fish. There are distinctive orange spots on the skin. Plaice is sold as whole fish, ready to cook and fillets. It is a delicate fish with soft flesh with creamy taste. Plaice can be prepared in many ways, such as fried, boiled, baked in the oven and so on.

Lemon Sole

Lemon Sole

Scientific nameMicrostomus kitt
Length max65 cm
Weight max3 kg
Age up toAbout 20 years
NutritionMainly molluscs and worms

The Lemon sole loves deep waters and hard substrates. Those circumstances can be found in the northern part of the North Sea. And that is precisely the fishing area of the Ekofish Group. There are no fisheries with Lemon sole as target species. The Lemon sole is primarily bycatch in the flatfish fishery. Ekofish Group also catches beautiful large (because of large mesh) Lemon sole with its sustainable twinrig fishing method. The taste of Lemon sole is delicate and it's flesh is soft. Often Lemon sole is compared with Dover sole. Lemon sole is sold both whole and in fillets.

Cod

Cod

Scientific nameGadus morhua
Length max150 cm
Weight max40 kg
Age up toAbout 25 years
NutritionMainly crustaceans, molluscs and fish

Cod is one of the most appreciated consumption fish. During daytime Cod swims in a shoal, at night they spread out to scrape their food together on the seabed. Almost anything edible disappears into the belly of a cod. Because Cod does not like warm water you will find the largest stocks in the north and along the coast of Norway. In the North Sea cod populations are recovering because of the many protective measures. Ekofish Group barely catches Cod because most roundfish can escape through the escape panels in the net. Ekofish Group, however, has a number of Norwegian colleagues for delivery of MSC certified Cod to its customers. Ekofish Group wants to be close to the source. In the winter Cod is also called Skrei. Cod or Skrei is sold as fillets, loins and whole headless.

Dover sole

Scientific nameSolea solea
Length max70 cm
Weight max3 kg
Age up toAbout 25 years
NutritionSmall crustaceans, mollusks and worms

It goes well with the Dover sole in the North Sea. Dover sole biomass is growing every year. Unfortunately Dover sole are hardly caught with the twinrig fishing method. Ekofish Group therefore has a close cooperation with some "pulse fishers" for Dover sole. The pulse rig is designed to catch Dover sole with less seabed disturbance and bycatch. It is in terms of sustainability currently the best alternative. Dover sole is an elongated flatfish. Dover sole has firm meat and neutral taste (not fishy), this makes the fish so popular in the kitchen. There are 1001 recepies to prepare Dover sole. Dover sole are mainly sold as whole fish.

Turbot / Brill

Scientific nameScophthalmus maximus
Scophthalmus rhombus

Turbot and Brill are also regularly caught by Ekofish Group. Both species are very tastefull. Turbot and Brill are mainly sold as whole fish.
